Jim Storace Aims To Wipe Away Regular Season Blues At Shangri-La II's Fall Brawl Modified Classic; 50-50 Starts At $1,003
Jim Storace, the Rome, N.Y. native now racing out of Kingston, N.H., endured a roller-coaster season at Shangri-La II Motor Speedway in 2010. A hard crash early in the season set him back, but he returned with a feature win and methodically worked his way back into title contention, only to see Jimmy Zacharias get hot just as Storace's fortunes went into reverse again. Zacharias was left to raise the trophy on the final night of the season, while Storace contemplated the question, "What if?"
Nothing can bring back the track title, but a victory in the 100-lap, $3,500-to-win Modified feature at the second annual Fall Brawl this Saturday would help to take the chill out of the long New England winter. Storace and teammate John Ramsey were two of the early entries received for the season finale, whose inaugural edition in 2009 attracted 25 Modifieds, the largest non-Race of Champions Series turnout in the track's brief history.
"9/11 Memorial Night" At Shangri-La II on Sat., Sept. 11 Will Qualify Winners For November's North-South Shootout At Concord, N.C.
In addition to deciding the 2010 track championships, the "9/11 Memorial Night" features at Shangri-La II Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 11 will send the Modified and Sportsman Modified winners to the 8th annual North-South Shootout at Concord (N.C.) Motor Speedway with guaranteed starting positions.
Shangri-La II's ASA Member Track program that night will also feature the ASA Late Models and the Street Stocks. The fallen heroes of that somber day nine years ago will be remembered during the evening.
The North-South Shootout, scheduled for November 5-6, also carries the title John Blewett III Memorial in honor of the late New Jersey modified standout who won the inaugural event in 2003 and repeated in 2005. It's a non-sanctioned race which brings together the top touring and weekly racers from tracks and series up and down the east coast with no points at stake, just money and bragging rights. Burt Myers, made nationally famous by the "Madhouse" reality TV show filmed at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C., is the two-time defending race winner in the premier division.
Shangri-La II September Schedule Includes "Labor Day Under Fire" Sat., Sept. 4; Point Season Ends With "9/11 Memorial Night" Sat., Sept. 11
Shangri-La II Motor Speedway will come back from an open weekend at the end of August with two important September racing events. On Saturday night, September 4, "Labor Day Under Fire" will provide fans their second opportunity of the summer to see a complete ASA Member Track stock car racing program at the Concrete Castle and a jet car drag racing exhibition at sister track SkyView Drags for a single price. One week later, the "9/11 Memorial Night" on September 11 will end the point season for the weekly classes, crowning the 2010 Modified, ASA Late Model, Sportsman Modified, and Street Stock champions.
Shangri-La II will close the 2010 season with the second annual Fall Brawl, a two-day event set for the first weekend in October.
In addition to the four weekly divisions, "Labor Day Under Fire" will showcase the INEX Legends. As was the case in July, the two tracks will coordinate their schedules for the night so fans can take a short walk up the hill to see the fire and fury of the jet cars during the intermission of the Shangri-La II race program.
"Our oval track fans enjoyed the variety in July, and we know some of the drag racing spectators took the opportunity to see the stock car features, so everybody got an entertainment bonus," said Shangri-La II track manager Amy Stilson. "The last time we presented this combination was also our first time under the lights at Shangri-La II, and we've upgraded the system since that time, so it will be even brighter on top of the ridge," she added.
"Labor Day Under Fire" carries a 6:00 p.m. green flag at Shangri-La II, with pit gates opening at 3:00 p.m. and practice at 4:30. For more information, visit shangrila-2.com or call 607-330-2622.
