Shangri-La II Becomes Number One On Race Of Champions Modified Tour
The ROC'n Concrete Rumble on Sunday, May 16 at Shangri-La II Motor Speedway attracted an intense level of interest from the moment it was announced as the first visit of New York State's premier paved track modified tour, the Race of Champions Series, to the half-mile concrete oval. Now the event has gained even greater stature as the opening race of the Race of Champions season following last weekend's rainout at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway, where nearly 50 tour-type modifieds jammed the pits for a combined show with New England's Modified Racing Series.
The Race of Champions event will follow an all-racing, no time trials format, highlighted by a 75 lap feature with only green flag laps scored. A full ASA Member Track program for the ASA Late Models, Sportsman Modifieds, and Street Stocks will be on the agenda as well.
Defending champion Matt Hirschman will lead the touring pros who include 2009 runner-up Rusty Smith, Pete Brittain, Earl Paules, T.J. Potrzebowski, Darren Scherer, and the father-son team of Jan and Mike Leaty. All have a strong fan base in the Southern Tier and all but the Leaty family raced at least once at the Concrete Castle in its inaugural season. Expected to lead the charge for the Shangri-La II regulars are champion John Markovic, Jimmy Zacharias, and Jim Storace, all winners in 2009, and possibly Rick Zacharias.
A third challenge could come from the New England NASCAR contingent, as there is no Whelen Modified Tour race scheduled that day. Ted Christopher, the 2008 Whelen Tour champion, raced at Shangri-La II's opening weekend last July and gave the new track a positive review.
The ROC'n Concrete Rumble on Sunday, May 16 is a one-day show. Due to preparation for the Rumble, there will be no racing at the Concrete Castle on Saturday, May 15. Instead, an open practice session is scheduled for Saturday.
The ROC'n Concrete Rumble will be the third race of the 2010 schedule at Shangri-La II Motor Speedway. The new season opens with the Concrete Duals on Saturday, May 1, and continues with the Mothers Day Delight on Saturday, May 8.
