May 20 - RoC -N- Concrete Rumble

Kyle Ebersole ran a full afternoon of practice laps at a Saturday afternoon practice session at the ASA member Track, Shangri-La II Motorspeedway. The practice was worthwhile in a big way as the Hummelstown, Pa driver led all 75 laps in the season opener for the Race of Champions Modified Pavement Series. Jimmy Zacharias remained the dominant driver in Sportsman competition as the two-time and defending champion collected his second consecutive win on the young season. Two-time and defending Street Stock Champion, Lee Sharpsteen dominated the field as he collected his first win of the season. Jeff Ameigh collected the win in the Pudgie's GoodTime Pizza, Pasta and Subs Four Cylinder Stocks.

520RoCpic-1Kyle Ebersole drew the pole position for the 75 lap Race of Champions Modified Pavement Series season opener with Daren Scherer drawing the outside front row starting spot. The pair paced the field to RoC Hall of Fame member, Jim Burleigh's green flag. Ebersole quickly jumped out to an early lead with Scherer having to fend off the challenge from Jimmy Zacharias and Billy Putney as they tried to follow the Ebersole ride up through the inside line toward the front. Scherer survived the challenge and did not let Ebersole out of his sight.

The first of six caution periods flew on lap 12 when Andy Walko and Dean Rypkema both spun. Billy Putney passed Zacharias for third on a lap 18 restart and held the spot until his car did not come up to speed on a lap 35 restart. Chuck Hossfeld started tenth and had moved up to fifth by lap 30. The caution on lap 35 was for Doug Reaume as he spun off turn 4. Dean Rypkema started 20th, and had worked toward the top ten. He recovered from the lap 12 spin, to run as high as 11th, but had to retire the ride on lap 49. Matt Hirschman moved up from his 12th place start to challenge Zacharias for third. Hossfeld, Hirschman and Zacharias ran nose tail for the next 13 laps until the caution flew when Jim Storace spun in turn 2. On the restart, Tommy Cloce spun in turn 2, and was collected by Bill Weichert.

The final caution flew on lap 65 as Rusty Smith had his Blue Ox number 34 spin in turn 2. Ebersole withstood the restarts, caution laps and the heat to collect the win, his first at Shangri-La II. Scherer ran a strong second. Jimmy Zacharias collected his second consecutive third place. 2011 Shangri-La II RoC winner, Matt Hirschman was fourth and 2010 Shangri-La II RoC modified race winner, Chuck Hossfeld was fifth. Andy Walko recovered from his lap 12 spin to finish sixth. Brian DeFebo, Wilbur Hebing, T.J. Potrzebowski and J.R. Kent completed the top five. T.J. Zacharias collected the top finishing spot for the two barrel carb Sportsman as the Sportsman cars were welcome to compete with the Modifieds due to a new RoC rules package put in place during the offseason.

Zacharias, Ebersole & Scherer in Winner CircleZack Truesdail and Jody Buckley led the Sportsman to the green flag in their 25 lap feature. Caution flew quickly as Tyler Rypkema spun in turn 3. Jody Buckley and Jimmy Zacharias led the field to a restart. Zacharias used the Mopar horsepower under the hood of his gold colored # 71 to move to the outside of Buckley and take the lead. Once out front, Zacharias had the car on a rail and moving away from the other competitors. Buckley drifted high in turn 2 on lap 6 allowing Zach Curren and John Wilber through to try and reel in the leader. The final caution of the event was for the hard impact of Zack Truesdail's # 12 as he had hard contact with the outside turn 2 wall. At the checkers, Jimmy Zacharias collected his second Sportsman win of the season. John Wilber finished second for the second week in a row. Curren finished third, Buckley was fourth and T.J. Zacharias finished fifth driving the car normally driven by John Markovic. Mikayla Rypkema finished sixth for the second week.

Two time and defending Street Stock champion, Lee Sharpsteen drew the pole for their 25 lap feature. Once out front, Sharpsteen extended his race lead to claim his first win of the season by nearly 3 seconds. Chris Zacharias bounced back from a bad week the week before to hold on to second place, once taking the spot from Gil Sharpsteen on lap 10. Glenn Lippolis had another good run, finishing fourth and Jeff Goodwin rebounded to finish fifth after suffering a flat tire in his heat race.

Dayton Cote took the lead in the Pudgie's GoodTime Pizza, Pasta and Subs Four cylinder Stocks away from Jeff Ameigh in turn two following the green flag. The lead would be short lived, however as Cote blew his engine in turn three on lap three. Jeff Ameigh, in his first race of the season, assumed the lead and held off Anthony Lane for his first ever Shangri-La II win. Lane finished second and Frank Morich was third. Last week's winner, Brandon Ameigh retired on lap 10 of the 12 lap feature.

Concrete Notes. Twenty Six Modifieds took the green flag for the RoC Modified feature. Bryan Sherwood was the highest finishing Modified Rookie in the 75 lap main event with a twelfth place finish. T-J Zacharias and Jody Buckley were the only two Sportsman competitors to take advantage of the new RoC rules package allowing Sportsman to be able to compete with the Modifieds for RoC Tour races. Sportsman rookie, Mikayla Rypkema finished sixth for the second consecutive week and claimed the highest finishing spot for the Sportsman.
