Tioga Center, NY - The Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Tour opens their 2012 season this Sunday, May 20 at Shangri-La II Motorspeedway – the high banked concrete half mile oval in Tioga Center, NY. Other divisions also seeing action this Sunday will be the Sportsman, Street Stocks, Pudgie's GoodTime Pizza, Pasta and Subs 4 Cylinders and Pudgie's GoodTime Pizza, Pasta and Subs 4 Cylinder Juniors.

Matt Hirschman is the defending winner of this first RoC race of the season at " The Concrete Castle", but there already drivers lining up to de-throne the champion. Erick Rudolph piloted Wilber Hebing's McGuire Motorsports back-up ride to a win last week in the track's season opener. Hebing had a dominant ride himself, but a spin on lap 8 of the 35 lap feature event took Hebing to the rear of the field. Hebing put on a driving exhibition to recover to a fifth place finish. Andy Walko was matching Rudolph's lap times in the waning laps of the feature, and had to settle for a second place finish. 2010 track Modified Champion, Jimmy Zacharias had a strong run, finishing third. Daren Scherer, Dean Rypkema, Brian DeFebo, John Markovic, Nick Barzee, T-J Zacharias, Jim Storace, J.R. Kent and rookie Bryan Sherwood all have a completed feature at the speedway under their belt.

Some of the other competitors expected to be in competition this Sunday include Chuck Hossfeld, Jan and Mike Leaty, Rusty Smith and Kyle Ebersole. The twist in this season's RoC Tour is the addition of cars with two-barrel carbs to the ranks of the modifieds. Jimmy Zacharias proved to be in race ready form with a strong Mopar under the hood powering his way to victory lane in Sportsman competition over an equally strong John Wilber. Rusty Smith, Zach Curren and Jody Buckley are definite threats to win. Three rookies saw Sportsman competition last week as Mikayla Rypkema was the highest finishing rookie with a sixth place finish. Dylan Terry finished ninth and Tyler Rypkema finished tenth.

518RoCpic-3Street Stock competition did not disappoint anyone with Jeff Goodwin holding off Gil Sharpsteen and Glenn Lippolis at the checkers. Strong runs were also put in by Charlie Sharpsteen, R.J.Zacharias, Terry Potrzebowski, Mike Nickels and Chris Bennett. Two-time and defending champion, Lee Sharpsteen will have his work cut out for him to rebound from a 13th place finish in the season opening event. The Pudgie's GoodTime Pizza, Pasta and Subs 4 Cylinders had just four competitors on opening day, but more cars are reported to being near race ready for this week. Brandon Ameigh collected the win over Dayton Cody and Frank Morich. Gene Purvis did not start the feature.

In addition to the racing, there will be activity with the Shangri-La II Kids Club. There will also be Silent and Chinese Auctions taking place at the Spalding Foundation Tent. The auction items are part of the items donated for the Al Robinson Fund Raising Benefit. All monies raised will go to Al Robinson as he battles back from a debilitating stroke 1 year ago.
